Today I have been
thinking about the importance of communication in dance. When I think of the
great ballet partnerships like Margot Fonteyne Rudolph Nureyev with the Royal Ballet, Maniya
Barredo and Nicholas Picana with the Atlanta Ballet, or Suzanne Farrell an
George Balanchine of the New York City Ballet, they were
imprinted on the hearts and minds of many because they learned each other’s
movement language and could translate it to the hearts of their audience. The
most brilliant dancers in the world must connect with each other as partners.
You can't zone out in your world and become an Island, and for me because I practice so much alone I
must always be present in the conversation of movement and not anticipate what
is next, but to treat each step like a revelation. Even in choreography the
challenge is to keep the language between each other fresh and to let the heart
speak the deep truths conveying the true emotion of the dance. These are the
things going through my mind as I rehearse today. I wonder what my next
coaching session will be like, hopefully I will be closer in mastering the art
of communication.
