CREATING A MASTERPIECE

During the last semester of my senior year at Spelman I took a painting class, It was a bit intimidating as I as with art majors but I felt the need to create. Several hours of care went into each work of art. I would work on layering, on shading and different parts of the whole. This to me is so similar to the creation of a dance where movement becomes the brush stroke of the heart and several parts intersect to form a masterpiece.

A few minutes before I am about to leave for class the sky opens up and it starts raining -of course it did because I left my umbrella! I hang out for a minute hoping it will clear. Immediately when I make the decision to leave the sky clears and the sun comes out shining a brilliant path to the studio. When I reach the studio after being greeted by Mario and Maxi I grab that crazy bar thing and start to rehearse smooth dances. I am being heckled as walk around studio and I am laughing because know how ridiculous this must look. One lady says to me “they need to put that on Facebook” another lady just couldn't compose herself she was laughing so hard- I love that I am drawing attention, and when people ask I can talk about the studio. All of a sudden I here this Afro- Caribbean inspired song that infuses my entire being, and I immediately put the bar down and start doing Rumba. I am starting to connect with the dance and am hopefully applying all the corrections I learned yesterday. I close out rehearsal today by working on perfecting my promenade turn. I am seeing my progression with each rehearsal, and seeing that as I connect with each dance my potential goes beyond the sky.
