REPETITION IS KEY

Today I am going to dance class and I am so happy I could skip!! When I get to the studio I start doing smooth dance basic steps. When I begin class with Maxi we review all the smooth dances, starting with a waltz, we then move on to Foxtrot and Maxi gives me pointers in the turn. Finally we move to Tango, and I am reminded that I need to move from the hips. Today we are working on Rhythm dances. We do the fastest East Coast Swing I have ever done in my life to Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before you Go-Go”. By the end of this dance I am panting I am so worn out! Maxi says “are you tired? You will be doing a lot of dancing in Argentina”. Maxi hasn’t even broken a sweat!! As we move to the Latin dances Maxi says I have one note for you- close your legs. Just close your legs. I start giggling and try to keep my legs glued shut while remembering the steps. At different times I am laughing so hard I can’t remember what to do next and just stop in the middle of the ballroom floor to Maxi’s Blank stare. Maxi is right, however my Latin dress will be tight and/or short, and I need to look graceful and confident. We get to Salsa and I keep turning on a diagonal instead of straightforward – Maxi says I am going to kill you! I am stunned! I look and see his eyes twinkling so he is just joking with me, but he wants me to get this step right. So we practice turning until I am dizzy and I remember to turn straight forward. We practice a Rumba cross body step and when I get it right Maxi is so excited and telling me how beautiful my form is. For homework I have to practice my Rumba walk.
