Today I am back in Lloyd Whitmore’s class, I didn’t realize
how much I have missed technique. There is a lot of free flowing music today,
and there is one piece with drums that completely resonates with my soul. Today
we do some intensive core work that reminds me of Pilates and some deep lunge
work.
Every movement is helping me
build my strength and endurance to be a controlled and sustained dancer. We
learn some more of the Trying Times choreography, I am so consumed with this piece
reflecting heartache over the state of the world. While I am working out the
details and the emotion I look in the corner and see two little girls, maybe
five or six years old completely mesmerized with our class watching us with
their head in their hands.
At
times they would even try to mimic our movements completely confident and
lighthearted. I smiled as I watched them remembering being a young dancer and
being drawn into the performances of exceptional dancers like Maniya Barredo
and Sarah Yarbrough, truly magnetic ballerinas with the Atlanta Ballet that
left an imprint on my
soul. As I continue to watch these
little girls I start to think about how I can pay it forward and live my life to
help those that will come after me.
