Last night The Tony Awards showed how the Arts can heal and
transform a community. James Corden who was the MC for the night was the
perfect choice to breathe laughter and life into a time of tremendous sorrow
and grief. A truly great performance has the ability to disarm people and be a
safe place to present ideas.
I am encouraged
by examples of compassion beginning to happen around the country, but the cycle
of violence has to stop. I believe that we as a people are stronger than an act
of terror, and through love we will help our brothers and sisters in Orlando
rebuild their lives. I am reminded of the Phoenix Bird, the symbol of Atlanta,
which is a mythical bird that rises from the ashes. May this spirit of
resilience encourage and uplift the hearts of all who are hurting.
