CONFIDENCE OF A QUEEN

Today for warm up Antonio and I went through Rumba, Cha-Cha, and Swing. I was delighted to go through each dance twice and having more fun than any person should have. All of a sudden Antonio switched into coach mode and I felt like an athlete training for the Olympics! At one point I thought he would make me drop to the floor and do 50 push-ups. I take this change in demeanor to means it's time to stretch to a different level, and I am smiling on the inside because when he gets tough I get better!
When we get to the choreography now that I know the movement the challenge is to utilize the ballroom. Antonio says “We are running out of space on the planet so if you have this much space in the ballroom use it. Have some energy! Move with passion!”

The next challenge was to project confidence and to develop a character for the dance- I started my second part of Diva Training school, Flirting 101. After a quote from RuPaul on what it means to love myself I got a pep talk on confidence. Maxi is watching my attempts at flirting and also gives input into how to build a character. I start to experiment and am getting praises from Both Antonio and Maxi. This is way beyond my comfort zone as I am naturally a shy person, but the studio is a safe place for me to go beyond myself. At the end of class Antonio said he was proud of me stepping out trying things without fear.

When class was over I watched Maxi rehearse for a few minutes keeping in mind what he said about character building. I am seeing how he connects with his movement and am feeling the emotions he is projecting as he dances.

As I reflect on class I start to think of Hatshepsut who ruled over Egypt in 1473 BC and Queen Elizabeth I who ruled over England in 1558. Each of these women had an inner knowing of purpose and decisiveness. They were sole rulers of their respective countries at a time when it was unheard of for women to reign. That is the type of courage I want to draw from as I grow into confidence- the confidence of a Queen.
